Choosing a pneumatic compression device

What we dispense, and why. Several manufacturers make appropriate devices — this is what ours does and what the published evidence shows.

E0651 and E0652 · leg, arm, trunk and abdominal garments · delivered and set up for the patient

The device we fit

Bio Compression Systems sequential circulator

01

Gradient sequential

Non-peristaltic. Distal chambers hold their pressure while the proximal chambers fill.

02

Three-year warranty

On the pump, across the lymphedema range.

03

Made in the USA

Moonachie, New Jersey. Domestic parts, service and replacement garments.

04

21 leg sizes, plus custom

Fitted to the limb rather than to the nearest available size.

05

Cleanable garments

Durable, wipeable nylon — it matters where infection risk is elevated.

06

4, 8 and 16 chambers

Leg, arm, trunk and abdominal garments. E0651 and E0652.

What the published evidence shows

Why a pump belongs in the plan

28%
less limb volume at one year
DESAI 2019
32%
lower infection rate
SORAN 2021
84%
still using it at 18 months
SORAN 2021
92%
of an expert panel recommend it
LURIE 2022

The first three come from studies run on Bio Compression devices by name. The same research also recorded direct cost of care falling from $4,239 to $600 per patient per year.

Ordering a pump

What to send us

Pump approvals turn on documentation. We review every file before it goes in and tell your office exactly what is missing.

Include with the order

  • A signed, dated prescription with the diagnosis and ICD-10 code
  • Chart notes from a recent face-to-face visit describing the swelling and symptoms
  • A documented trial of conservative therapy — compression garments or bandaging, elevation and exercise — with dates
  • Limb measurements before and after the trial, and why swelling is still not controlled

What we do next

  • Check the patient's benefits and handle prior authorization when the plan requires it
  • Fit the garments and deliver and set up the pump at the patient's home
  • Call the patient at 30, 60 and 90 days to make sure it's working and being used
  • Keep your office updated through Parachute or by fax

E0652 needs extra justification. For a fuller look at device codes and documentation, see Lymphedema Pumps: Evidence & How to Choose. Requirements vary by plan, and we confirm them for each patient.
