What is a lymphedema pump?

A lymphedema pump, also called a sequential compression pump or pneumatic compression device (PCD), is a home machine connected to an inflatable garment for the leg, arm, chest or trunk. The chambers in the garment fill one after another, from the foot or hand toward the body, gently moving fluid out of the swollen limb. Most people use their pump at home once or twice a day while sitting or lying down.

Who may need a compression pump?

• Leg or arm lymphedema, including lymphedema after breast cancer, lymph node removal or radiation
• Lipedema with swelling
• Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) with leg swelling or venous leg ulcers
• Swelling that keeps coming back even with compression stockings, wraps, elevation and exercise

Insurance, Medicare and prescriptions

A compression pump requires a prescription. Medicare and most private insurance plans can cover a lymphedema pump when your medical records show the diagnosis and that compression garments, elevation and exercise have not controlled the swelling, usually after a four-week trial. We work with your doctor's office on the prescription and notes, check your benefits, and tell you your out-of-pocket cost before anything ships.

Compression pump FAQs

How long do I use a lymphedema pump each day? Most prescriptions call for about an hour once or twice a day. Your doctor sets the schedule and pressure.

Can I still wear compression stockings? Yes. A pump works best alongside daytime compression garments or wraps, which hold the reduction between sessions.

Is a compression pump the same as a DVT pump? No. A lymphedema pump treats chronic swelling at home. DVT pumps are used for a short time, often after surgery, to help prevent blood clots.
