Custom or Standard Garments

Recommendations for a custom garment:

  • You have a disproportionate limb, which will cause a looser fitting garment. The gap area will not maintain swelling and cause a ballooning effect.

  • Your limb size does not fall in the standard range.

  • In certain cases, such as lymphedema or extreme swelling, a higher amount of containment (stiffness) in a flat knit custom garment is required to contain limb swelling.

Flat knit garments have a seam and offer excellent therapeutic results. Only available as custom-made, they can accommodate a variety of shapes and sizes. The fabric is stiffer and certain fabrics have a micro massage weave, which is preferred for areas with severe swelling. Combined with an optimal level of compression, flat knit garments offer the maximum containment in an elastic compression garment. Other features include:

  • Improved aesthetics - now available in a variety of colors

  • The density of the knit remains consistent throughout the garment (even at areas of larger circumferences, which is important for managing swelling)

  • A Stiffer compression garment will better maintain the gap at the skin folds and is less likely to cut into the skin

  • Durable for extreme wear and use

  • Not made with natural rubber (Latex free)

What flat-knit material is best for a patient?

Custom flat-knit garments are primarily used during the maintenance phase of the lymphedema treatment process when patients have transitioned from the reduction phase to a stable volume level. When making a garment selection, a clinician must consider the following therapeutic needs of the individual patient:

  • Level of containment – the more robust or stiff the material, the more containment

  • Patient activity – some materials and features allow for more freedom of motion during activity

  • Application needs – making good style selections can influence patient compliance

From the strongest reliable hold to a lighter more discreet option, we have options for both lower and upper extremity needs, for primary and secondary lymphedema up to stage 3, and up to lipedema stage 3.
