What to Expect at Your Compression Fitting Appointment

A good fit is the most important part of compression therapy. Your fitting appointment makes sure your garment applies the right pressure in the right places and is comfortable enough to wear every day.

Before your appointment

  • Schedule it early in the day, when swelling is lowest. If you're bandaging, come right after your bandages are removed.

  • Bring your prescription and insurance card.

  • Wear or bring loose clothing, such as shorts or a sleeveless top, so we can measure your limb easily.

  • Bring your current garments, if you have any, so we can see what's working and what isn't.

  • Make a list of questions and anything that's bothered you about past garments.

During your appointment

  1. We talk about your needs. Your diagnosis, daily activities, skin and any trouble putting on garments.

  2. We measure your limb. We take circumference and length measurements at several points. Custom garments need more measurements than ready-to-wear.

  3. We help choose a garment. Style, compression level (based on your prescription), fabric, color and closures.

  4. We show you how to put it on, and suggest donning aids if they would help.

  5. We go over care, including washing, wearing schedule and when to replace it.

The appointment usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. Custom garments are made to order and typically arrive in a few weeks.

After your appointment

Wear your new garment as prescribed and pay attention to how it feels. Contact us if it's too tight, slides down, leaves deep marks, causes numbness or tingling, or feels uncomfortable. Small adjustments can make a big difference.
