Lipedema is a chronic condition that causes painful, uneven fat buildup, usually in the legs, hips and sometimes the arms. It affects mostly women and often starts or worsens during puberty, pregnancy or menopause. It is not caused by overeating or lack of exercise, and lipedema fat usually doesn't respond to dieting the way regular fat does.
There's no cure yet, but daily habits can ease pain, reduce heaviness and help slow progression. Here are practical tips to feel more comfortable.
Everyday tips for comfort
Keep moving, gently
Low-impact movement helps your lymph system and muscles move fluid out of your legs. Good options include:
Swimming and water aerobics, where water pressure acts like natural compression
Walking, cycling or using an elliptical
Yoga, Pilates or gentle stretching
Start slow and build up. Wearing compression during exercise can reduce aching afterward.
Wear compression every day
Compression garments support the tissue, reduce heaviness and help with swelling. Many people with lipedema find flat-knit garments most comfortable because they don't dig into soft tissue. Leggings and capris can look like regular clothing.
Consider lymphatic therapy
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle massage done by a trained therapist. Many patients find it eases pain and heaviness. Your therapist may also recommend a pneumatic compression pump for home use, especially if you have swelling.
Care for your skin
Lipedema skin can bruise easily and become dry. Moisturize daily, protect your legs from cuts and bumps, and check your skin for redness or sores.
Eat to feel your best
No diet removes lipedema fat, but healthy eating supports your overall health and can help limit regular weight gain. Many patients and specialists favor an anti-inflammatory style of eating, with plenty of vegetables, lean proteins and whole foods, and fewer processed foods and added sugars. Talk with your doctor or a dietitian before making big changes.
Take care of your emotional health
Lipedema is often misdiagnosed, and many people have been told for years that it's simply weight. That can be frustrating and isolating. Lipedema support groups, both online and in person, can connect you with others who understand. A counselor can also help.
Finding the right care
A doctor who knows lipedema can confirm your diagnosis and build a treatment plan. That plan may include compression, therapy, a home pump and, for some people, lymph-sparing liposuction performed by a specialist surgeon. Compression is usually still needed after surgery.
