Using Your Compression Pump at Home: Tips and Troubleshooting

A pneumatic compression pump works best when you use it consistently and correctly. These tips help you get the most from every session and solve common problems.

Getting set up for a session

  1. Follow your prescription for how often and how long to use the pump, often once or twice a day for about an hour.

  2. Find a comfortable spot. Sit or lie down with the limb supported and, if possible, slightly raised.

  3. Remove your compression garment before the session, unless your provider tells you otherwise.

  4. Put on the pump garment over clean, dry skin. Make sure it's smooth with no wrinkles or folds.

  5. Connect the hoses firmly to the garment and the pump.

  6. Turn on the pump and start the program set by your installer. Don't change pressure settings unless your provider tells you to.

  7. Put your compression garment back on after the session to hold the results.

Tips for success

  • Use the pump at the same time each day so it becomes routine.

  • Use the time to read, watch TV or rest.

  • Do some deep breathing before you start. It helps get lymph moving.

  • Keep the pump garment clean and follow the manufacturer's care instructions.

  • Keep track of how your limb looks and feels, and share changes with your therapist.

Troubleshooting

  • Pump won't turn on: Check that it's plugged in, the outlet works and the power switch is on.

  • Garment doesn't inflate: Make sure hoses are firmly connected and not kinked or pinched.

  • Air leak or hissing sound: Check hose connections and look for tears in the garment or hoses.

  • Alarm or error message: Check the user guide for the code, then call us.

  • Garment feels too tight or painful: Stop the session and call us. The garment or settings may need adjusting.

Stop using the pump and call your doctor if you notice new pain, numbness, tingling, skin color changes, or signs of infection such as redness, warmth or fever.
